Mauricio Pellegrino believes his Southampton side can use the 1-0 victory at Fulham in the Emirates FA Cup as a platform to build on.
James Ward-Prowse’s first-half goal secured the club’s first win in ten games, and a place in the fourth round of the competition as a result.
The boss was particularly pleased with the spirit of his players, as the hosts pushed for a late equaliser at Craven Cottage.
“It was important because we needed a performance like this to show to the others that we are really strong as a team,” Pellegrino said.
“I think we defended well and we showed spirit from the beginning until the end of the game.
“It was a difficult game, because Fulham are a good team who play good football and manage the ball well.
“But I think we looked dangerous on the counter-attack and could’ve scored the second goal.
“We have to use this as a base to improve and learn that we are capable of being solid. This performance can help us to be better next week.”
