Charlie Austin expressed his delight after marking his first Premier League start of the season with a brace as Southampton thumped Everton at St Mary’s.
Austin’s pair of second-half headers added to an early opener from Dušan Tadić and a late fourth from Steven Davis.
The striker was quick to praise the service from his teammates, having taken his chance to impress manager Mauricio Pellegrino.
“We knew we’d had the better of the first half and we just went out all guns blazing and killed the game off,” Austin said.
“I said to the lads ‘just whip it into the front post and I’ll be there – if not, that’s on me’.
“In the second half they were two great balls from Berty and Dušan. I’m delighted to get the two goals – it’s massive for me and I’m really pleased for myself.
“I’ve had to wait patiently and work hard on the training pitch to give the manager some questions, which is what I’ve done over the past two or three weeks.
“I was rewarded with a start today and I’ve rewarded him with two goals.
“It’s not just me – that was a massive performance from everybody involved.”
