Mauricio Pellegrino believes his team will win more games than they lose if they keep producing performances on the same level after Southampton were narrowly beaten by Manchester United at St Mary’s.

Romelu Lukaku scored the only goal of the game in the 20th minute, but Saints were dominant after half-time and the visitors were left hanging on for victory.

Despite the defeat, the boss was happy with how his side equipped themselves against high-flying opponents.

“Football is about efficiency and you have to score goals,” Pellegrino said.

“We couldn’t do that and it’s something we have to improve.

“The good news is that we played really well against one of the biggest teams in the Premier League, and we can look to the future with optimistic feelings.

“Playing this way we will win more games than we lose.

“It was a good game to see where we are against this type of team.”

Saints carved out numerous opportunities, but a precious equaliser eluded Pellegrino’s men.

“Scoring goals is the most difficult thing in modern football,” he added.

“As a manager you can work out how to create chances, how to get into the final third and how to penetrate the defensive system of the opponent, but sometimes it depends on confidence and football things.

“If we keep playing in this way, we will score goals.”
