Two long-range strikes either side of half time saw Southampton suffer a 2-0 defeat at home to Watford in the Premier League.

Abdoulaye Doucouré opened the scoring on 38 minutes with a low drive into the bottom corner, before substitute Daryl Janmaat then confirmed the victory just minutes after being introduced.

Mauricio Pellegrino made three changes to his side for the visit of Watford to St Mary’s.

Maya Yoshida, Dušan Tadić and Mario Lemina dropped to the bench as Wesley Hoedt made his Saints debut and Sofiane Boufal and James Ward-Prowse came into the starting eleven.

The visitors enjoyed the majority of the ball during the opening exchanges, but were unable to convert any of that possession into a meaningful chance.

At the other end some high-pressing saw Saints win the ball back in the final third and Boufal skipped down the left flank to deliver a low cross from the byline, though the delivery was just too far ahead of the onrushing Oriol Romeu at the edge of the box.

Watford continued to threaten going forward and on the other side Andre Gray worked enough space on the edge of the area to strike at goal, only to see his effort well blocked by Jack Stephens.

It was the visitors that eventually took the lead on 38 minutes. As the ball dropped 25-yards out, Doucouré was the first to react and he lashed a low strike past Fraser Forster and into the bottom left corner.

It could then well have been two just before the break. Gray again found enough space on the left of the area to fire at goal, but Forster was on hand to push the striker’s effort against the side netting.

Mauricio Pellegrino used the interval to make his first change of the afternoon, as Dušan Tadić was introduced in favour of James Ward-Prowse.

The substitute almost made an immediate impact as he threaded in Ryan Bertrand after a smart one-two, only for the right-back’s strike to be blocked and put behind for a corner.

Marco Silva then moved to make a double change, as Younés Kaboul and Kiko Femenía made way for Adrian Mariappa and Darly Janmaat.

It was the latter that soon put the visitors two ahead. On 65 minutes the Dutch defender hit a fierce 25-yard strike into Forster’s far corner to double Watford’s advantage.

Pellegrino then moved to make his final changes of the game, as Shane Long replaced Manolo Gabbiadini and Charlie Austin came on for Boufal.

Despite the attacking substitutions and a late long-range strike from Cedric, Saints were unable to find a way back into the game and Watford stood firm to secure all three points.
