Charlie Austin and Matt Targett expressed their delight at returning to action with Southampton Under-23s against Manchester City.

The pair played 70 minutes and 61 minutes respectively in their first games back from injury.

“It felt good to be back. I did enjoy it and I’ve worked hard to get to this point,” Austin reflected.

“I’ve enjoyed training in the past few weeks but I had the bit between my teeth to play the game.

“I’m happy with the 70 minutes. The hard work has been put in place and I’m ready for a strong finish.”

Targett added: “I was happy to be back. We had a control of the game at 2-0 up and it’s a shame we couldn’t hold on to the win.

“Personally, it was enjoyable to be back on the pitch and get some minutes.

“At this stage I just need to give match minutes and gradually work my way back into the first-team.”
