Radhi Jaïdi believes Southampton Under-23s should have taken all three points against their Chelsea counterparts.
Josh Sims and Jake Hesketh had good opportunities to break the deadlock either side of the interval, though Jaïdi felt Saints didn’t create enough chances going forward.
“We didn’t create too many opportunities,” he explained.
“So there is a little bit of a disappointment there in terms of the result because we weren’t expecting to take just one point from this game.
“Some of the boys it is the first time they have played together – we understand that, but with the experience level we had we could have done better.”
New signing Martín Cáceres made his debut in a Southampton shirt against Chelsea, accompanying Alfie Jones in the heart of defence.
The 29-year-old played the duration of the goalless draw, and Jaïdi was very pleased with his contribution.
“That’s the first time I’ve seen him playing,” he continued.
“He showed some quality and was calm and composed on the ball. His passes broke the lines and he looked to pass forward into the midfield areas.
“I am not surprised, though. He has played at a high level and he showed that. With a bit of fitness I am sure he will be involved at first-team level.”
