A delighted Jay Rodriguez felt Southampton’s emphatic win over Leicester was an ideal result ahead of Wednesday EFL Cup semi-final decider with Liverpool.
Saints beat the reigning Premier League champions 3-0 at St Mary’s, sending them into the second leg of their tie with the Reds high on confidence, as well as with a 1-0 aggregate lead.
Rodriguez, who scored in between efforts from James Ward-Prowse and Dušan Tadić, was thrilled with the team’s display against the Foxes.
"It was very good,” he said. “Three goals and a clean sheet – you can't ask for more really from the lads. It's a good result going into the game on Wednesday now.
"I think there were good moments in the first half. We looked dangerous and we looked solid at the back. We got the two goals, which was important.
“First half was good and second half they changed formation, which made it difficult for us, but I thought we dealt with it well.
"I thought we kept the ball well, we were happy to get the third and that was that.
"It's important to get the confidence and the feel-good factor of winning. We know we've got a tough game now against Liverpool at their place, and we want to get to the final, which would be massive for us.”
