Claude Puel has confirmed Southampton’s new captains following José Fonte’s recent departure.
Steven Davis will take on the role of Club Captain, while defender Virgil van Dijk has been named Team Captain, meaning he will lead the side out on matchdays when named in the starting line-up.
And Puel says both Davis and van Dijk deserve the roles.
“Virgil will be the captain of the team, with Davis also as a captain of the club,” Puel told southamptonfc.com after the win against Leicester City.
“It’s two very important people and players in the squad, who have earned a lot of respect from their teammates.
“Davis and Virgil will give a good attitude and a good spirit to the rest of the team, and that’s important.”
Puel also confirmed after the game that van Dijk would be assessed having come off injured against Leicester. The defender will hope to be available for the trip to Liverpool on Wednesday.
