Jason McCarthy netted his third goal for Walsall on Saturday, as they produced a fine display to beat table-topping Sheffield United.

The Saddlers got off to the perfect start at the Bescot Stadium, as Amadou Bakayoko opened the scoring in just the fifth minute, but the visitors equalised shortly after through Jack O’Connell.

Southampton loanee McCarthy would then restore the advantage for his temporary club just before the hour mark, as he finished calmly after a neat one-two in the build-up.

Joe Edwards added a third for Walsall nine minutes later, before a penalty from Erhun Oztumer with 15 minutes remaining sealed an impressive 4-1 win for Walsall.

The result leaves Walsall 14th in League 1, nine points off the play-off places.

In the Championship, Sam Gallagher was on the wrong end of a five-goal thriller, as Blackburn lost 3-2 to Ipswich Town at Portman Road.

Tom Lawrence opened the scoring with a low free-kick, before Hope Akpan levelled just before half time.

Christophe Berra restored the lead for Ipswich, before Lawrence grabbed his second with a fine strike to make it 3-1.

Danny Graham’s penalty pulled one back for Blackburn, but they couldn’t find an equaliser, with the result leaving them in the relegation places.

Out in Spain, Paulo Gazzaniga played the full 90 minutes as Rayo Vallecano drew 1-1 with Sevilla Athletic in Segunda División.

Ivi Lopez opened the scoring in just the second minute, despite the best efforts of Gazzaniga, before the Saints loanee made a smart save to prevent Sevilla doubling their advantage.

The save would prove vital, as Adrian Embarda netted an 87th-minute equaliser to earn Rayo a share of the spoils. The draw leaves Gazzaniga’s temporary club 16th in the table.
