Davis: Our mentality won't change

By SFC Media time Thu 08 Dec Saints vs Be'er Sheva

Steven Davis is hoping for a lengthy run in the Europa League this season, starting with progression against Hapoel Be’er Sheva at St Mary’s.

It is a winner takes all clash but a while a 0-0 draw would also see Saints progress to the round of 32, Davis insists there will be no let up in a winning mentality.

Claude Puel’s men have lost once in their last 16 home games in all competitions, winning 11 games in that period.

Davis said: “We’re aware there is different permutations but our mentality is always the same, which is to approach games to try and win them especially at home.

“We’ve had two good results here already in the Europa League so it’s about trying to continue that.

“We know it is going to be a tough game but we’re fully confident we can get the right result.”

The Northern Ireland international has experienced the highs and lows of the Europa League, reaching the final with Rangers in 2008.

And he is hoping that Southampton can enjoy similar success as they bid to continue competing on all fronts.

if you'd have said at the start of the group,   'win your last home game and you're through', we'd have taken that.

“I look back on that time very fondly. It was a step too far for us on that occasion but it was a great experience and something I took a lot out of,” Davis continued.

“We had the disappointment last year in qualifying [against FC Midtjylland] where we didn’t make it to the group stages which irked us a lot.

“We’re enjoying the competition and we want to progress. We’ve got a good opportunity finishing off with a home game.

“If you’d of said at the start of the group to win your last home game you’re going to go through we’d have taken that so we’re in a good position.

“We want to be involved in all competitions after Christmas and really see how far we can go this season.”
