The first National Training Day of the academic year for Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM) Registrars was hosted by Oxford Deanery and held at Southampton’s Staplewood Campus on Wednesday.

The Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine (FSEM) UK oversees the post-graduate medical training programme, with Southampton FC included as a centre of excellence in Football Medicine, which sees them host a trainee for a year-long attachment.

The training day saw graduates gain more of an insight into the club’s established medical and science processes, the injury prevention & athletic development programme and the underpinning research.

Dr Steve Baynes, Southampton’s Director of Medical Services and a member of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine, and Mo Gimpel, Director of Sports Medicine and Science Performance Support, played host to the graduates at the Staplewood Campus.

Dr Steve Baynes said: “This was a unique opportunity for SEM Registrars to gain experience in the elite Football Medicine environment, with learning focused on working within a high performance multi-disciplinary team.”

Mo Gimpel added: ”It was a privilege and a natural next step for us in holding this day after we have been supporting Oxford Deanery's training programme over a number of years now.

“It is important we share our knowledge and experience in supporting the next generation of SEM Consultants, it will be these Doctors that will support our future footballers, the football industry & other international sports.

“In addition, they will be responsible for promoting exercise for the future health of our nation. By helping them today, it will help us in the future.”

The FSEM sets standards of excellence for the Sport and Exercise Medicine post-graduate curriculum, including Musculoskeletal Medicine, Exercise Medicine and Team Care, producing highly skilled medical experts who work across all levels of sport, exercise and in the NHS.
