Rodriguez: We know the importance of Saturday

Saturday’s visitors may have scored 40 goals in their 14 competitive games so far this season, but Jay Rodriguez says Southampton will only be focusing on themselves when Liverpool visit.

Jürgen Klopp’s side head to St Mary’s looking to continue their impressive start to the campaign, which sees them go into Saturday’s round of fixtures top of the Premier League.

Rodriguez, who came off the bench in Saints’ previous league outing at Hull City before the international break, is targeting a rapid response following that defeat, in a game he knows is of huge importance.

“It’s going to be a good battle against their strikers for our defence, but it will also be crucial to make sure we take our chances,” Rodriguez said.

“After the Hull game we were very disappointed and we can’t wait to put it right.

“The international break was a long break, but the lads are raring to go again.

we know how important these matches are to the fans.

“It’s important that we focus on ourselves and make sure that we do our jobs properly on Saturday.

“We know how important these matches are, so we just want to get the three points.”

Rodriguez will be coming up against a number of former teammates on Saturday, but says Saints’ players mustn’t let that have any impact.

“It’s normal to come up against old teammates. You just need to be as professional as possible,” he added.

“During the game you are very focused on the match itself. You’re in a team environment and you are just focused on a positive result.”
