Reed: We want players to buy into our vision

Les Reed says the focus for Southampton this summer is on the club’s current stars committing their long-term futures to St Mary’s.

Virgil van Dijk, Fraser Forster and James Ward-Prowse all committed their long-term futures to the club just before the end of the season, with van Dijk and Ward-Prowse extending their contracts until 2022 and Forster signing a new deal until 2021.

The news was a huge positive ahead of the summer, and Reed says he’s in talks with other Saints stars about signing new longer-term contracts.

“It’s very important [ahead of the summer] and that’s not finished,” Reed said when talking to “I’m still talking to agents of our current players to get more of those signatures on paper.

“It’s the next step for us, because we’ve had two summers where our focus has been on players leaving and we want to turn that corner.

“We want to look at the focus being on our players buying into the long-term plan and vision for the future and signing longer contracts because they want to be here.

“We’re in the process of all of that as well. Hopefully we can settle down and be completed as near as we can to the front end of the transfer window rather than the back end.

“The focus is getting our players to commit longer term, to keep the core of the squad together and then fine tune the squad from there.”

And Reed says he has been in regular conversation with manager Ronald Koeman ahead of the summer transfer window about what is needed moving forward.

“Ronald and I have talked for some months now in terms of what our requirements are. This is a good squad, we have good depth and the important thing is to keep that together,” Reed added.

“Then we can fine tune it with the areas we feel we’re missing, rather than big changes. There are enough teams in this transfer window going to do that.

“Virgil, Fraser and James are like our early signings were last season. That’s a good sign. There are a few more we’d like to do that with, but at the same time we are looking at targets for the summer.”
