Shane Long struck as Ireland drew with a Netherlands side containing Virgil van Dijk at the Aviva Stadium.

Long struck just past the half hour mark with a close range finish after John O’Shea’s header was spilled by goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen and the Southampton striker was on hand to tuck the ball into the net.

The Saints man nearly struck again after half time when he headed over from Jonathan Walters’ cross, and was substituted off not long afterwards.

Long made way just over an hour into the contest and was replaced by West Bromwich Albion’s James McClean.

The Netherlands pressed and found a leveller late on when Luuk de Jong headed home Jetro Willems's cross.

Van Dijk completed the full 90 minutes for the Dutch who also face Poland and Austria in friendlies next week.

On Tuesday Long’s Ireland host Belarus who were beaten 2-0 by Steven Davis’s Northern Ireland at Windsor Park tonight.
