Virgil van Dijk was the big winner at Southampton Football Club’s Player Awards night on Wednesday evening.

The defender scooped both the Fans’ Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season after an excellent first campaign at St Mary’s.

Van Dijk, who joined from Scottish champions Celtic in the summer, was voted as Saints’ best player by both the club’s supporters and his teammates on a special night at St Mary’s.

The 24 year-old picked up over 50 per cent of the fans’ votes, with striker Shane Long finishing second and midfielder Steven Davis coming third.

Fellow defender Ryan Bertrand also picked up an award, as he won the President’s Choice award, which was chosen by Terry Paine MBE.

The England international returned from an early-season injury lay-off to impress throughout the campaign, stepping into a central defensive position on a number of occasions for Ronald Koeman’s men.

It was a big night for the defenders, as Cuco Martina’s stunning strike in Saints’ 4-0 win against Arsenal on Boxing Day was voted as the club’s Goal of the Season.

The summer signing’s brilliant curling effort against the Gunners raked in over 70 per cent of the votes, both online and in the room on the night, to come out on top ahead of strikes from Graziano Pellè, James Ward-Prowse, Steven Davis and Jay Rodriguez.

It was also a defender who won the club’s Young Player of the Season, as Alfie Jones picked up the award for a fantastic campaign with Saints’ Under-18s and Under-21s.

Jones began the season with Craig Fleming’s Under-18s, before making the step up to the Under-21s post-Christmas and impressing for Martin Hunter’s men in the Barclays Under-21 Premier League.

His performances were noted by first-team boss Koeman, as Jones trained with the senior side on a number of occasions during the second half of the 2015/16 campaign.

The final presentation of the night saw goalkeeper Kelvin Davis recognised for his incredible service to Southampton Football Club.

With his testimonial coming up at St Mary’s next week, Davis was presented with a special award, thanking him for his efforts since during his ten-year playing spell with the club.
