Ronald Koeman is hoping to get Jay Rodriguez back to his very best this summer now that the forward has completed his return to first-team action.
Having returned from a long-term knee injury for the start of this season, the forward then had his campaign interrupted by a foot problem in October.
He made his return earlier this month, culminating in him starting last week’s 4-2 win away to Aston Villa.
With this season nearly at an end, Koeman is optimistic of getting Rodriguez back to top form ahead of the 2016/17 campaign.
“He missed a lot this season,” Koeman told reporters at his pre-Manchester City press conference. "You like him to improve and you like to give him what he needs, still more game time, still more freshness and, of course, with a very good pre-season that he is really on his level, and that’s what we have to do.”
Koeman says he is also considering how much he will use Rodriguez over the final three games of this season.
“We have competition in our squad, we’re still fighting for something,” he continued. "Maybe if we don’t play really to get Europe then maybe it makes it different - then maybe you can think more about young players and players who need game time."
