Fonte: We might need to win last three for Europe

José Fonte thinks Southampton will probably have to win their last three games to earn a place in Europe – but the captain is confident they have what it takes to achieve that.

Saints are currently eighth in the Barclays Premier League table and will wrap up their season with Sunday’s home game against Manchester City, followed by a trip to Tottenham Hotspur and a final-day clash with Crystal Palace, at St Mary’s.

Assessing the team’s Europa League hopes, Fonte said: “There is definitely a chance. We will probably need to win three games. We know it is difficult but we need to take it game by game.

“We have a tough one next Sunday, but we believe we can do it. We have proved already that we can beat anyone in this league. If we can stop the major threats that Man City have and try to keep a clean sheet, we will give ourselves a great chance to beat them.

“Man City is a great team and they have many others who can come up with something special. We have to be compact and it will be a challenge but it’s a challenge we are looking forward to.”

Fonte added: “It will disappointing not to reach Europe, especially if we get more points than last year. It’s a fantastic end of season and we will be unlucky if we don’t get Europe after winning the next three games. We believe that if we win the next three games, we can do it.”
