Ronald Koeman has revealed that Steven Davis will miss the visit of Newcastle through injury, but that striker Shane Long is available again.
Davis is sidelined with an ankle injury that he picked up in last Sunday’s 1-0 defeat at Leicester City, but Long is fit after missing the Foxes match with a knee problem.
“We have an ankle injury of Steven Davis,” Koeman told Southampton’s official YouTube channel. "He got it in the Leicester game and he will be out for one or two weeks and we have to wait, but he's not available for the weekend. Shane Long is back. He had a good week of training and he's back like normal."
On the loss of Davis, Koeman added: "He's an important player who normally starts always. He's an experienced player, but injuries are part of football and we have enough competition to replace Steven Davis."
While Davis’s absence is a blow, Koeman is pleased to welcome Long back into the fold, following a good run of form before missing the trip to King Power Stadium.
"It's a boost, because Shane is really a different striker than most of the strikers,” said Koeman. "He's fast and he's really with the total confidence in his game and that was showing before, and I hope that he will continue."
