Cuco Martina is pleased to have played his part in recent games for Saints and hopes he’ll continue to be ready when called upon by Ronald Koeman.
Martina has started in each of the last three league games which has coincided with an unbeaten run for the team, and the defender is happy to have had the chance to build up some momentum with his performances.
“Every player wants to play and if you can be a part of the team then you feel good,” he told reporters ahead of the trip to Leicester City.
“The coach picks the team and if he needs me there then he knows I will be available.”
The full back has played more often than not when the team has lined up with four defenders, but believes he’s not restricted to playing in one position.
“It’s the boss’ choice whether we play four at the back or three,” he explained.
“Sometimes it’s hard for me but you need to keep going and next time you will get your chance again.
“It’s good to have players who can play in the same position here,” he added. “Cédric is also a good player and we make it hard for each other.
“I want to train hard and so does he. We push each other harder than if we didn’t have that.”
Saints head into Sunday’s game at Leicester on the back of two wins and a draw from their previous three Premier League fixtures, and Martina is looking for the team to have a strong end to the season.
“I think we look forward and not back,” he said. “The game against Stoke City was a great win, then against Liverpool was a great win which gives us hope to achieve our highest place.
“If we can achieve the Europa League then it’s a big achievement for the club and we want to keep looking forward.
“You know that Leicester is a good team who like to play counter-attacking and forward, but we need to stick to our game plan and if we do that then we can win there.”
