Fonte: At least four wins needed for Europe

José Fonte believes Southampton will need a minimum of four wins from their last seven games in order to qualify for Europe.

Saints head into tomorrow’s clash with Leicester City in seventh position, three points behind Manchester United and West Ham immediately above them, and four back of Manchester City, who occupy the final Champions League spot.

Ahead of the trip to King Power Stadium, Fonte told Southampton’s official YouTube channel: “We're in a good position – we are four points off the Champions League, fourth spot.

“We know that to achieve European competitions we will need to win at least four-to-five games. It will be tough, but the mood is great and we will work hard to achieve that.”

Saints, who have beaten Stoke City and Liverpool in their previous two games, secured their best Premier League finish last season when they came home in seventh, which was good enough for a European spot on that occasion.

Fonte believes they can finish even higher this time around.

The Saints captain said: “We've come off two good results, two good wins. We have seven games to go, which should be a fantastic end of the season. We will give everything to achieve a better position than last year. We have to take it game by game and we'll see where we finish in the end.

"We've been showing that we are capable of being where we are. We showed it in the last two seasons, we're showing it again this season that we're a top-ten team in the league, so we know that we have the quality in us and it's all about working hard and keep doing the right things and hopefully we can achieve better than last year.”
