Davis targeting history with Northern Ireland

Steven Davis is targeting a record-breaking night for Northern Ireland when they host Slovenia in a friendly match at Windsor Park this evening.

Michael O’Neill’s side have headed back to Belfast after their 1-1 draw away to Wales last Thursday – a result that extended the country’s unbeaten run to nine matches.

If Northern Ireland can avoid defeat against Slovenia (7.45pm BST), they will set a new record for their longest ever run without suffering a defeat.

With the build-up to UEFA EURO 2016 continuing, Davis believes it is vital they carry on their momentum tonight.

“It’s huge. Confidence plays a big part in football and we’re obviously in a good moment at this point in time,” he said.

“To really to go from sort of the extreme of the World Cup qualifying campaign, the disappointments of that, and then obviously into the Euro campaign, which we’ve just qualified from, and to get that consistency is credit to the work that the boys and Michael and his staff have done as well.

“We’re enjoying the moment that we’re in and embracing it and it would be nice to go and get that record.”

Reflecting on the draw with Wales, in which Craig Cathcart’s opener was cancelled out by a late Simon Church penalty, Davis told the Irish FA’s YouTube channel: “I think there’s a lot of positives to take from it. It was another good performance against a good side away from home.

"We’re obviously disappointed not to win the game, having been ahead so late on, but it was another opportunity for us to continue our development as a team and give some of the younger players more experience and also try a different system, so there was a lot of positives to take."
