Saints' best trips to Arsenal

By SFC Media time Sat 30 Jan Club

As Saints prepare for Tuesday's trip to the Emirates Stadium, we look back at five of the club's most memorable away visits to Arsenal.

Arsenal 1-2 Southampton, Capital One Cup, 23rd September 2014

Saints ended a wait of 27 years for a victory away to Arsenal, as they won a thrilling third-round tie at the Emirates Stadium.

Alexis Sánchez’s sumptuous free-kick in the 14th minute had put the Gunners in front, but the visitors stormed back to take a lead before half time that they would never relinquish.

Dušan Tadić netted the equaliser from the spot, after Sadio Mané, who was making his debut, had been tripped by Tomáš Rosicky, and Saints won it when Nathaniel Clyne unleashed a 35-yard thunderbolt that rocketed past Arsenal keeper David Ospina.

Saints grabbed a late point away to an Arsenal side that would go on to become champions, thanks to Jo Tessem’s late header.

Tessem rose to nod the ball back into the far corner from an Anders Svensson free-kick in the 79th minute at Highbury.

His goal cancelled out Sylvain Wiltord’s opener for the Gunners shortly before half time.

This remains the last league victory that Saints recorded away to Arsenal, and it came courtesy of a late strike from Danny Wallace.

With a mixture of neat footwork and a slight bit of fortune, the forward managed to work his way past a couple of Arsenal defenders and then poke the ball past John Lukic in goal.

Saints’ victory was all the more impressive, as it ended a run of ten straight league wins for the Gunners.

Saints staged a superb comeback to cancel out a two-goal deficit, following David Cork’s 16th-minute goal and Charlie Nicholas’s penalty four minutes after half time.

Steve Moran got the visitors back into the game when he beat Pat Jennings with a low shot shortly after the hour mark.

Saints continued to press and they got their reward when Moran thumped home an angled shot with 15 minutes left.

Mick Judd netted on his full debut for the club to set Saints on their way to a victory that ensured they would retain their status in the top flight.

Judd headed in from close range after 33 minutes at Highbury to put the visitors ahead, and, when Joe Kirkup’s hopeful lob from out near the corner flag right on half time sailed in, Saints were well in command.

The win was rounded off ten minutes from the end, when Terry Paine fired home a penalty.
