Van Dijk targets positive start to 2016

Saints defender Virgil van Dijk is targeting a memorable start to the new year, after enjoying an “amazing” 2015.

Ahead of today’s trip to Norwich, for the first match of 2016, the centre-half reflected on a memorable 12 months for himself, after moving from Celtic to Saints in the summer, while then going on to earn his first caps for the Netherlands.

"It's been a fantastic year for me and also for my family of course. It's a year never to forget. I've enjoyed everything from Celtic to where I am right now, and I'm still enjoying it. It's amazing,” he told reporters.

“I'm privileged to be here at this club and to play for Southampton.”

On his recognition with the Dutch side, for which he has been capped three times now, van Dijk added: “It's every boy's dream to be representing your country and it was for me the same, and hopefully I can build on it.”

For now, though, van Dijk’s focus is solely on the trip to Carrow Road.

“For us, of course, we want to start the year positive and hopefully get a good result,” he said.

"I think it is a game that we need to win. If we want to be where we want to be we need to win. We need to look forward and we need to win the Norwich game. It's going to be one hell of a game I think, and a tough one, and we need to be up for it.

"It's away, but, with the quality we have and the players as well, I think if we're up for it we have a big chance to get a good result there, but still it's going to be a very tough game and we need to be up for it.”

The Saints defender added: "In this league everything can happen. It's very tight on the ranking, but we need to be a little bit more consistent and start winning games and hopefully we get a run going.”
