Ronald Koeman says his players understand the importance of this weekend’s visit to Crystal Palace.
Saints are without a win in their previous four matches in all competitions, but came from behind to earn a draw against Aston Villa last weekend.
Koeman’s side head to Selhurst Park two points behind this weekend’s opponents, and the Saints boss has been pleased with the work done on the training ground.
“I believe how you train is how you play and how you play is the way how you train,” Koeman told youtube.com/southamptonfc.
“We changed a little bit the sessions for this week. We did more specific exercises to the players. We did a little bit shorter sessions but with more intensity.
“I think we need that at this time in the season. It’s been a good week, the week was intense for the players.
“Everybody looks sharp and everybody understands the importance of this weekend.”
Saints missed numerous opportunities to take the lead against Aston Villa in the opening stages of the game last weekend, before Joleon Lescott opened the scoring for the visitors just before half time.
And Koeman says he’s been working hard with his players in training to make sure they improve their quality in front of goal.
“We asked and we need more sharpness in the chances we create because it needs to be more on target,” he added.
“I think we’re more focused at the moment to get shots on target because if it’s on target then you have more of a chance than if it’s not, like last weekend.
“We played well (against Villa) and we maybe create the same chances as last year when we scored four in 20 minutes.
“We need more quality. They know that and we work hard to get to where we would like.”
