Ronald Koeman says Steven Caulker will get his chance to impress in the absence of José Fonte against Liverpool this evening.
Caulker came on in place of the injured Fonte at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday against Manchester City, with Koeman impressed by the defender’s performance.
Following that impressive cameo, and with Fonte ruled out of the Capital One Cup clash, Koeman has confirmed Caulker will get another chance against the Reds.
“I was very pleased how Steven came into the pitch and did a great job against City. He will start,” Koeman told reporters ahead of the game.
“Steven is as strong as [Christian] Benteke, if he plays. That’s not a problem for Steven because he is physically a strong defender and has the confidence to start.
“Maybe he had some difficulties in the beginning and of course José was in front and Virgil in front in both positions Steven can play.
“I’m not a manager who changes a lot if the team is doing well, but now – it’s always a question to the players – when they get the chance you have to take it.
“That’s also the reason after Saturday that I said to Steven he will start.”
