Koeman hopes to build Cherries rivalry

Southampton boss Ronald Koeman insists Sunday's game against AFC Bournemouth IS a derby – despite the lack of historical rivalry between the two sides.

This will only be the 22nd time the clubs have met in a competitive game, and the first since they clashed in League 1 during the 2010/11 season.

Nevertheless, Koeman is fully embracing the derby element of the game as Saints search for a second home win in five days following Wednesday's Capital One Cup victory over Aston Villa.

He told youtube.com/southamptonfc: "In my opinion it's a derby – but maybe not the biggest one, because there's not a lot of history between both clubs. 

"I hope that they will stay in the Premier League so that we will get a few years in a row to play against each other.

"Normally, it makes it a little bit easier for the manager because they (the players) have that feeling of it being a derby. 

"Everybody will have more attention to the game, and that makes it a little bit more special. You need that to be successful."
