England call for Bertrand pleases Koeman

Ryan Bertrand has been named in the England squad for their upcoming October qualifiers, much to the delight of Saints boss Ronald Koeman.

Koeman was pleased to see the left-back play the full 90 minutes against Swansea City last weekend, having made his comeback three days previous in the win against MK Dons.

Bertrand will join up with Roy Hodgson’s squad after Saturday’s game against Chelsea, and could feature in their two UEFA EURO 2016 qualifiers against Estonia and Lithuania.

Koeman, speaking to youtube.com/southamptonfc said: “I’m very happy he’s back in our team. He showed his qualities after a long time out to play on that level.

“That’s a big compliment to Ryan. If he is okay, on the level what he can bring he’s an option for the national team. We know that was last year and it will always be in the future.

“I didn’t expect 90 minutes from him because he was out a long time, he didn’t have any pre-season, but he was comfortable. He was clever in his position and he made good runs.

“We know if Ryan is playing on his level he’s one of the national team and that’s good because it’s good for the confidence of the player and it’s good for Southampton.”

Bertrand’s England face Estonia in their penultimate qualifier on Friday 9th October, with the game getting under way at 7.45pm BST at Wembley.

Their qualifying campaign comes to an end the following Monday as they take on Lithuania away from home, with kick-off once again at 7.45pm BST.

Bertrand will return to Saints following the conclusion of the game to prepare for the Barclays Premier League clash with Leicester City.
