TALKING POINTS: Koeman's pre-FC Midtjylland press conference

By SFC Media time Wed 26 Aug Club

Ronald Koeman spoke to the media on Wednesday afternoon ahead of Southampton's UEFA Europa League clash with FC Midtjylland.

Here's what he had to say:

On Jay Rodriguez…

I think it’s normal that it takes time for Jay. I’m surprised about what he did last Thursday because it was really on a high level and he’s still not 100 per cent.

When he is 100 per cent and on his level for sure he will be an interesting player for the national squad. Don’t put too much pressure on Jay.

It will come. First Southampton. It takes time and if he is 100 per cent, he will for sure be one of the targets for the national team.

I spoke several times to Jay and we speak about his situation. We like Jay to be really on his level and then normally he will start every game and will play normally 90 minutes because he’s an important player for the team.

On his approach to the second leg…

We know how they play and we know what the strengths are of the team. One thing we know we have to score and we can’t defend a result. We have to go for it and we will go for it. That means we have to win the game or to draw the game more than 1-1.

On what he expects from FC Midtjylland…

They don’t have reasons to change because they scored an important away goal, they had a good result. I think I expect the same opponent in the way of playing and the strengths and weaknesses what we saw last week.

I think finally we had to win the game because we had the best chances. If we play on our level then I’m confident to reach on in the Europa League.

On what his side needs to do better…

I think the second half we demonstrate the way how we have to play and how we have to make problems for them. Maybe in several moments to play more direct, we had a lot of ball possession in our own half first half. The time that we had a little bit more pressing, better pressing, then we were the better team on the pitch.

On adopting a more direct style…

Tomorrow is all about two games, two results. You want to always play attractive football but the main thing is to win the game and how is not important.

On the importance of the game…

In my opinion there are enough reasons for a difficult start to the season. I expected a difficult start to the season about all the reasons we spoke about.

I never have negative things about when it’s happened or when we lose. I’m always positive, always thinking in the most positive way to win the game and if not, then I will answer the question.
