José Fonte was left frustrated following the 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur at St Mary’s on Saturday.
Fonte was within inches of winning the game in the dying seconds with a diving header, but the captain watched on as the ball flew just over the bar.
It left Fonte ruing not only his miss, but also the opportunities Ronald Koeman’s side had created throughout.
“I felt that although they had more possession we controlled the game and had many more chances,” Fonte told reporters after the game.
“That has been our downfall a little bit, we cannot get the goals we need to kill the game. We had a couple of good chances to go two up.
“We didn’t take them and we conceded and equaliser. We’re not happy because we deserved more.
“It’s disappointing because we should have won. We showed that we are dangerous and created more but for us one point is not enough really.
“I’ve been trying to get my goal this season. For various reasons it hasn’t happened and it was my day again. A little bit more luck and I could have had two.”
Fonte praised Graziano Pellè for his display, with the Italian striker scoring twice to take his tally to 15 for the season.
“That’s what he can do,” Fonte added. “When he is on his game he is unplayable so that’s what we want to see, Pellè like we did.”
The defender was frustrated that Saints were not able to turn the tide in their favour in the race for fifth and sixth in the Premier League, but says the players will keep fighting.
“We keep going, but we knew we had a good chance to win and make sure it was in our hands,” Fonte added. “Now we have four games and we need to hope they drop a few points so we can get fifth or sixth.”
