James Ward-Prowse scored the winner for England Under-21s, who beat their German counterparts 3-2 at the Riverside Stadium.

The Southampton midfielder captained the Young Lions, and scored the decisive goal in the 82nd minute, as Gareth Southgate’s side fought back from 2-1 down.

The visitors took the lead through Philipp Hoffman inside the opening 20 minutes, but Southgate’s young team responded well.

They should have been level when Ward-Prowse’s corner was headed on by Ben Gibson, but Jesse Lingard was unable to tap home from close range.

Lingard made up for that miss soon after, however, as he finished smartly from Carl Jenkinson’s cut-back to him on the edge of the box.

Despite their dominance at the end of the first half, England found themselves behind for a second time soon after the restart.

Hoffman was left unmarked to tap home for his second of the night from Serge Gnabry’s ball into the box.

Nathan Redmond’s deflected strike with just over ten minutes left drew England level, and Ward-Prowse had the final word, finishing coolly from Jenkinson’s pass.
