TALKING POINTS: Koeman's post-West Brom press conference

By SFC Media time Sun 01 Mar Men's First team

Ronald Koeman spoke to the media after Southampton's 1-0 defeat to West Bromwich Albion in the Barclays Premier League at the Hawthorns on Saturday.

Here's what the manager had to say:

On the early goal being the difference…

I think more than a little bit because we know and we expect how they play out of a good organisation and you know after the fast 1-0 then they are defending more.

They dropped more and then you have to be very good to create because there is no space. We saw the game what we expect and much more what we expect after 1-0 after one minute.

I think the difference was they won more second balls than we did. We tried everything but we didn’t create a lot. I think maybe one big chance for [Graziano Pellè] and the next one was a little bit difficult in the battle with the defender.

On the manner of the goal conceded….

I think we didn’t have good organisation at that time. Craig Dawson won the header and we had enough defenders back and the ball came by Saido Berahino and he scored a great goal.

But you have to have more attention in the start of the game. We expect that we will have more ball possession than they will have and after 1-0 down it’s more difficult.

On whether he regrets changing formation...

No. If I have to do the line-up again, I would do the same. We played I think this season two or three times out of this system. We won every game and the players know the system.

We have players to do and to play out of this system but after the 1-0 down every time we had three defenders against one attacker and that was the decision what I made to change.

On the current form of his players…

I don’t like to talk about one player. I think the whole team performance is a little bit down than in the beginning of the season. We tried to change that, to change players and positions and it all is out of a little bit less confidence.

On a wobble at the worst time….

Ok, we have to accept it and keep going. We know every game is a difficult one because every team is fighting for the position and for points and for winning. We understand that.

On his hopes between now and the end of the season...

I was always realistic because a lot of big teams normally fight for those positions in the table. We tried to win more points than Southampton did last season and if we play our way of playing then we will see what happens.

We are not focused on the position on the table. We are focused on how we play football. That is the best solution. At this time it is still the best solution.
