Fonte rallies troops after Baggies loss

José Fonte says Southampton’s players and fans must stick together after the team suffered a second successive defeat, going down 1-0 at West Bromwich Albion.

The captain cut a frustrated figure after the game, but was quick to rally the troops going into Tuesday’s home fixture against his old club, Crystal Palace.

“The last couple of games were ones we really wanted to win, obviously, so this is disappointing,” Fonte told the club’s official YouTube channel.

“As a club, we need to stick together because we’ve done fantastically until now and there are still 11 games to go. We all need to keep fighting. 

“We need to look at the bigger picture. We’re still in a good position, and there’s a lot to play for.

“We know where we want to be as a club, as a team and as a group of players, so Tuesday’s game is massive.”

Nevertheless, Fonte could not hide his disappointment after Saido Berahino’s second-minute goal ended Saints’ run of five successive away wins and put a severe dent in the club’s hopes of European qualification.

“We conceded another early goal and went the whole game trying to find the target, and again we couldn’t find a goal,” he said.

“That’s something that has been happening for a while now, but we need to keep strong and believe in each other. Without putting too much pressure on the guys up front, we need to – as a team – pull through this.

“We have to trust each other and keep working hard on the training ground so that things turn around.”
