Clyne: No time to dwell, we're focused on Arsenal

Saints defender Nathaniel Clyne says the squad have put Sunday’s defeat to Manchester City behind them, ahead of Wednesday night’s clash with Arsenal.

City inflicted a 3-0 defeat on Saints at the weekend, the first loss for Ronald Koeman’s side since early October when they were beaten at White Hart Lane, but Clyne says the response has been positive.

Having already won at Emirates Stadium this season in the Capital One Cup, where Clyne scored what he described as the best goal of his career, the 23 year-old says Saints will need a similar performance if they are to repeat the feat.

Speaking to youtube.com/southamptonfc, Clyne said: “[We have reacted] positively. We went over the game, decided what went wrong and we’ve put that game [against Manchester City] to bed.

“We’ve got another big game on Wednesday and we need to put in a good performance there. The games are coming thick and fast throughout the Christmas period so focus quickly turned to Arsenal.

“There was no time to dwell on it, we just have to move on and just pick ourselves up for the next game and try and put in a good performance there.

“We’re still confident in our ability. We just need to prove to everyone that we can bounce back and put in a good performance against Arsenal.

“We played them in the Capital One Cup and we managed to win the game. We need another performance like that again to get something from the game.

“For myself personally I scored a great goal, I’ve not scored another goal like that, so maybe I will try my luck again on Wednesday.”

Arsenal currently sit sixth in the Premier League and have come under pressure for their performances so far this campaign, but Clyne believes they still have plenty of quality in their squad.

Having spent time away with six of their current first-team on international duty, and enjoyed a battle for the right-back spot at Saints with Calum Chambers last season, Clyne knows it will be a tough game.

“They are on the back of a win on Saturday, they will be high on confidence so it will be a tough game for us. We have to be right on our game to compete at the level they will be at,” he added.

“They have got quality players all round the pitch. They are an attacking threat, they can score goals and they can defend as well. We need to be on the top of our game.

“I spoke to him [Chambers] when we were away with England about playing each other soon. I made a joke that last time he set me up for the goal.

“I said he can set me up again but he said that wasn’t going to happen this time! It will be good to play against him and hopefully we can turn them over again.”
