THE MIXED ZONE: Alderweireld, Wanyama and Fonte on loss

A trio of Saints players stopped to talk to the media following Southampton’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester City. Here’s what they had to say:

Toby Alderweireld on taking the positives, despite defeat…

“I think we didn’t play that bad but there were some details that cost us the game and we have to man up – Wednesday is a big game again, so we can prove ourselves.

“During the game we came better and better. We controlled the game, had a couple of chances, not the greatest, but we weren’t playing that bad. Unfortunately they scored.

“Our feeling was we could get at least a point. We defended good and we didn’t give a lot away, especially in that moment with the ball off the line. Then after that it became better and it is a shame we lost 0-3.

“0-2 came too quickly. If it keeps 0-1 we can put pressure on them and create chances, put some crosses in and get a point. Unfortunately we got the second goal too fast against us.”

Victor Wanyama on what went wrong for Saints against Manchester City and Morgan Schneiderlin’s injury…

“It’s just difficult to play against City, also their quality of players, but I think we were a bit unlucky but that’s football sometimes.

“It’s always a bit difficult when someone is injured or something. It’s always hard but we had to adjust and get on with it, but it was a bit difficult. I think today we made a few mistakes and they punished us.

“We hurt them [at times] and we have seen what we had to do better, and it’s a good game to learn. So we will learn from our mistakes and hopefully next game we will do more.

“It’s going to be a tough game, it’s always a tough game. Hopefully we can get something out of it. We just want to bounce back.”

José Fonte on how Saints will look to bounce back positively once again…

“We have to. There’s no time to think about negatives and losing and then you get in that negative state of mind. There’s no time. This is football.

“Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. We lost against the champions. Obviously we are not happy but there’s no time to think about what ifs or stuff like that – it’s just focus on the next one.

“It is three points that we lost. But, as I said, there’s a lot of games to come and we’re still in a good position, with a lot of points, and we’ve got to move on and try and win the next one.”
