Fonte happy with mature performance at Hull

José Fonte says Saints produced a mature performance to come away with all three points from the KC Stadium against Hull City on Saturday.

Victor Wanyama’s stunning early goal was the difference between the two sides as Saints picked up their sixth league clean sheet of the campaign.

The three points moved Saints onto 22 from their opening ten games, and made it ten wins from their last 11 matches in all competitions.

Asked if Saints deserved their three points, Fonte said: “Absolutely! They didn’t create almost anything, especially in the second half. We were very compact.

“We were dominant in the game, we scored a great goal and then after that we needed to manage our energy, manage the game and I thought this was a very mature win.”

Wanyama’s goal, from all of 40 yards, in just the second minute was enough for Saints, and Fonte said he’d urged the midfielder to take the shot on.

“It was unbelievable. I was behind him and I told him ‘shoot’, thank god he went for it,” Fonte added. “He has been doing so well, he has scored three goals this season, if he keeps scoring that is good for the whole team.”

While Fonte was delighted to make it four straight wins in all competitions, the defender reminded everyone that Saints would be taking it one step at a time.

“I’m just pleased for the whole club. Another great victory and another clean sheet,” he added. “We are thinking game-by-game, we want to win every game.

“We did a great job [against Hull City], we can enjoy it a little bit, but we focus on next week at home to Leicester, a very tough game again. We will see where it takes us.”
