Saints duo start as England end with a point

Luke Shaw and Adam Lallana rounded off their 2014 FIFA World Cup campaigns by starting in England’s goalless draw with Costa Rica.

The Saints duo made their first-ever competitive international starts as Roy Hodgson made nine changes to the side beaten in their first two group-stage matches.

The pair looked more than comfortable during a tepid opening half at the Estádio Mineirão in Belo Horizonte, with the Three Lions having perhaps the better of the limited goalscoring chances.

Lallana picked up a booking on 57 minutes and was substituted five minutes later, going off to be replaced by Raheem Sterling.

Shaw, meanwhile, played the full 90 minutes as the curtain came down on an ultimately disappointing campaign for the Three Lions.

Both players will now return to England with their countrymen ahead of the 2014/15 campaign.
