Gastón Ramírez stepped off the bench to immediately set up the winning goal as Uruguay beat Italy to qualify for the last 16 of the 2014 FIFA World Cup finals.
The South Americans went into their final Group D fixture knowing that only three points would do if they were to reach the knockout stage.
Ramírez started the game on the bench as a tempestuous encounter developed at the Estádio das Dunas in Natal.
Italy went down to ten men on 59 minutes when Claudio Marchisio was shown a straight red card.
Ramírez replaced Crisitan Rodríguez with 12 minutes to go and, within three minutes, he had teed up the winner as his corner was headed in by Diego Godín.
Uruguay finish the group stage in second place, a point behind winners Costa Rica, while Italy and England go out.
La Celeste will face the winners of Group C – almost certainly Colombia – this Saturday at 9pm GMT at the Estadio Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro.
