Shaw starts in Ecuador draw

Luke Shaw made his first senior England start in a 2-2 friendly draw with Ecuador at Miami’s Sun Life Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Saints full-back managed 74 minutes in the pre-World Cup match before being replaced by John Stones, while Adam Lallana came on for a brief cameo with three minutes of normal time remaining.

Enner Valencia handed the Ecuadorians an eighth-minute advantage with a powerful header before Wayne Rooney tucked in from point-blank range to level matters again.

Shaw’s charge forward gave Rooney the opportunity to double his and England’s tally soon after but his attempt was wayward on this occasion.

Recently-departed Rickie Lambert turned the clash in the Lions’ favour with a powerful drive after a mazy Ross Barkley run, only to see the strike bettered by a stunning, long-range hit courtesy of Michael Arroyo.

Shaw left the field of play four minutes later to give Stones a run-out while Lallana was only afforded a handful of minutes as Roy Hodgson’s side failed to snatch the lead again.

Southampton’s two representatives and the rest of the squad will return to the Sun Life Stadium for their final friendly before the World Cup when they meet Honduras on Saturday – kick-off 9.45pm BST.
