Saints hard done by, says Victor

Victor Wanyama feels Southampton deserved more from Saturday’s trip to Barclays Premier League leaders Arsenal.

The midfielder put in an accomplished performance but saw Olivier Giroud’s double consign his team to only their second league defeat of the season.

Arsenal’s first goal came when Giroud capitalised on hesitancy in possession from Saints goalkeeper Artur Boruc, before the Frenchman added a second from the spot after José Fonte fouled Pet Mertesacker.

“It was a tough one against a top team,” Wanyama said as he reflected on the match.

“Going to the Emirates was always going to be difficult, but I felt we deserved better.

“We could have taken something from the game because they didn’t create much – they just hit us from our mistakes. Next time, we will try to make less mistakes.

“In football, we learn from mistakes,” continued the Kenyan.

“Yes, Artur made a mistake, but the whole team will learn from it. We are going to support each other and work hard to get a result in the next game.”

Saints face another away trip this weekend, as they travel to face third-placed Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

And Wanyama says this weekend’s result has not dented the side’s confidence ahead of that game.

“Right now, I feel like we can play against anybody,” he insisted. “We have our own style, so we can face anyone.

“It’s very important that we work hard now because the next game is going to be another tough one, but we’ll just have to play our own way and try to get a result.”
