Good Night For Gastón

By SFC Media time Wed 12 Jun Club

Gastón Ramírez helped Uruguay boost their hopes of reaching the 2014 FIFA World Cup as they won 1-0 in Venezuela overnight.

La Celeste went into the game in Ciudad Guayana seventh out of the nine South American teams vying for a place at next summer's finals in Brazil.

But last night's win, secured courtesy of a 28th-minute goal from Edinson Cavani, lifts Ramírez and his teammates into fifth spot with four games left to play.

The Southampton playmaker started the game, and put in a lively performance before retiring to bench on the hour mark.

It wasn't such good news for Ramírez's Saints teammate Nathaniel Clyne, who was involved for England Under-21s in their final group game at the 2013 UEFA European U21 Championships.

Having been left on the bench for the Young Lions' second Group A fixture, Clyne was recalled as England looked to recover some pride having been beaten in their opening two games to prematurely end their hopes of reaching the semi-finals.

However, things did not go to plan against hosts Israel last night, as Stuart Pearce's side were beaten 1-0 in Jerusalem to end the tournament without a point.

Clyne and his teammates will fly back to England today, with the right-back now getting some much-needed rest before pre-season begins next month.

Fellow Saints defender Maya Yoshida was also on duty yesterday, but was left on the bench as Japan rounded off their World Cup qualifying campaign by beating Iraq 1-0 in Qatar.

The Samurai Blue had already sealed their spot at next summer's finals, so coach Alberto Zaccheroni took the opportunity to shuffle his pack for their final Group B qualifier.

The rest will have come in handy for Yoshida, with Japan now flying off to Brazil for the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup.

Ramírez and Uruguay are also involved in the tournament, with there being the possibility that the two Saints teammates could come head-to-head in the knock-out stage if they qualify from their respective groups.

A full preview of the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup will be on saintsfc.co.uk later in the week
