Euro Disappointment For Clyne

By SFC Media time Thu 06 Jun Club

Nathaniel Clyne's 2013 UEFA European U21 Championship campaign started with defeat as England Under-21s were beaten by their Italian counterparts last night.

Saints defender Clyne started the game at right-back with the Young Lions looking to extend a run that had seen them win their previous nine games and keep clean sheets in every one.

Italy were on top for much of the encounter, though England had two goals ruled out before Lorenzo Insigne eventually gave the Azzurri the lead on 79 minutes.

The result leaves England bottom of Group A with one game played. Next up is a game against third-placed Norway on Saturday.

The Young Lions' remaining group schedule is as follows:

Saturday 8th June, 5pm BST kick off

England U21s vs Norway U21s – HaMoshava Stadium, Petah Tikva

Tuesday 11th June, 5pm BST kick off

Israel U21s vs England U21s – Teddy Stadium, Jerusalem

Also in action last night was Saints midfielder Gastón Ramírez, who came off the bench at half time of Uruguay's friendly against France in Montevideo.

The playmaker had a hand in the only goal of the game, making an excellent pass that eventually led to the ball finding Luis Suarez to score the winner for La Celeste.
