International Summer For Saints

By SFC Media time Thu 30 May Club

Southampton’s international stars will be flying the flag for their respective nations over the next few weeks.

World Cup Qualification is on the agenda with four of our senior players, including Gaston Ramirez, who will also be representing Uruguay in the Confederations Cup which is being played in Brazil between the 15th and 30th June.

Also away at senior level are: Emmanuel Mayuka, Maya Yoshida, and Artur Boruc.

Mayuka’s Zambia are looking to consolidate top spot in Group D of the African Qualification process, with games against Sudan and Lesotho.

Should the Chipolopolo secure the top spot which currently occupy, they will then be one of ten teams paired into five home-and-away ties for automatic World Cup qualification.

Maya Yoshida has already joined up with the Japanese squad which is preparing for their World Cup qualifier with Australia next Tuesday (4th June) in Saitama.

Japan need a draw from the Australia game to confirm their spot in next year’s Finals in Brazil. They will also play Bulgaria in a Kirin Challenge Cup friendly at Toyota Stadium today (Thursday).

Goalkeeper Artur Boruc will be looking to cement his position as Poland’s number one next week. A friendly against Liechtenstein on Tuesday is followed up by a trip to Moldova, where the Poles will be trying to close the gap to England and Montenegro at the top of Group H in World Cup Qualification.

Our home-grown talents are also taking strides at international level this summer, across various levels with England.

Jordan Turnbull and Calum Chambers have already been away with the Under-19s this week as they sought a place in the UEFA U19s Championship Finals. Both men played in England's opening two games in the Elite round of qualification which ended in draws versus Georgia, and Belgium, respectively. Chambers was then a second half substitute in Wednesday evening's final group game, against Scotland which England won 3-0. However, Georgia qualified instead courtesy of a 2-0 win over Belgium.

Elsewhere, Nathaniel Clyne has now linked up with Stuart Pearce’s Under-21s, who begin their European Championship campaign next week in Israel. They will face Italy, Norway and the hosts over the next fortnight.

Finally, James Ward-Prowse has made the cut of 21 players in the U20s squad that will travel to Turkey to play in the FIFA U20 World Cup at the end of June. The Three Lions will play Chile, Egypt and Iraq in their group.

There’s potential for a Southampton reunion in the last 16 if the competition too, as goalkeeper Cody Cropper will also be representing his native America in the tournament.
