'Stay Focused!' Urges Adkins

Nigel Adkins revealed that he has warned his players not to take their eye off the ball ahead of Sunday's visit of Newcastle after their victory at QPR last weekend.

Saints have taken four points from their last two fixtures, having only picked up five in their previous ten Barclays Premier League games.

But the gaffer told the media that he has been keen to ensure that his squad do not lose focus as they approach back-to-back home matches against the Magpies and Norwich City four days later.

"The players are buoyed from the last couple of performances and it has been a good week of training," Adkins said this afternoon.

"The spirit has been good, and there is a confidence about the players. I think we have seen a growing maturity about the side who have become accustomed to the division now.

"The build-up to last week was a good one on the training ground, and the players followed up a good performance against Swansea the week before against QPR with a well-deserved victory.

"The early part of the week was very good, but I must say after the first 20 minutes of the session today I had to stop it and say ‘come on, don’t just go through the motions, you have to up it.’

"We can’t think that what we did last week will be good enough to see us through," he warned.

"You have to be on it in every single training session, and I can tell you that the final bit of the session was absolutely bang on – which is exactly what you want.

"We have to make the players realise that they can’t take their feet off the pedal at any stage.

"We have a young group of players who need to strive to improve all the time and give it everything so I was pleased at the end of the session to see they took that on board."
