Lambert Hails Gaston

Rickie Lambert praised the contribution of Gaston Ramirez after the Uruguayan’s role in the win over Aston Villa.

Lambert may have dispatched two of Saints’ four goals on Saturday afternoon, but the club’s current top scorer was full of admiration for Ramirez, who was an equally pivotal figure in the comeback.

“He’s some player isn’t he?” Rickie told Saints Player.

“He’s something special, and I thought that he, Ads and Puncheon made my job much easier today.

“Any team when a player like Gaston comes in is just going to be improved on and I thought he was excellent today.

“He’s sees everything including what’s going on behind him and the runs that you make and that makes everyone’s jobs that much easier.”

Saints looked dangerous at every opportunity when they poured forward, and Rickie was impressed with the performances of those around him.

“They’re all good to play with and I think the difference today was that we pushed the team back.

“Everyone knows what kind of football we like to play and we need to have the other side of our game and I think that’s what we showed today.

“Obviously we like to play football as well, but when we push teams back I think we play a lot better and we’ve got more space to play in which is certainly what happened more in the second half.

“It was a great feeling to get the three points,” Lambert continued.

“We equalised and then I think we just went up a few gears and I thought we could have scored more. We were terrific and outstanding in the second half, so all credit to the boys.

“In the teams that we’ve played so far it’s been a harsh lesson for us and we have suffered on every mistake that we’ve made, but we believed that going into this game we could get something out of it and we’ve got a win so hopefully we can push on now.”

Like his manager, the forward reserved special praise for the fans as well, and he was pleased to reward the efforts of the supporters.

“They clapped us off and it’s those little things that push you on, and in the second half they did it again so full credit to them but I don’t expect anything less from them now to be honest because they’ve been like that since I’ve been here.”
