LIV vs SOU As It Happened
Key moments so far
- All four goals come in the first half at Anfield
- Roberto Firmino's early opener cancelled out soon after by Ché Adams
- Darwin Núñez grabbed a brace before the break
- Saints now head into the mid-season break
FULL TIME: Liverpool 3-1 Saints
An encouraging performance away from home, but it's not enough for Nathan Jones to claim his first points as Southampton manager. Darwin Núñez's brace and Roberto Firmino's opener secure the three points for Liverpool, with Ché Adams's header a consolation. Saints will now head into the mid-season break before facing Lincoln City in the Carabao Cup in December.
Van Dijk close again
The Dutchman gets his head to a corner, but it curls just wide of the post.
Liverpool substitution: Nathaniel Phillips replaces Trent Alexander-Arnold
Liverpool substitution: Fábio Leandro Freitas Gouveia Carvalho replaces Darwin Núñez
Liverpool substitution: Konstantinos Tsimikas replaces Andrew Robertson
A late triple change for the hosts.
Southampton substitution: Joe Aribo replaces Roméo Lavia
A final sub, as Aribo replaces Lavia who hobbles off - let's hope it's nothing serious.
Unlucky, Sali
Ward-Prowse's wide free-kick is flicked on by Salisu, with a diving Lyanco unable to apply a finishing touch at the back post.
Adams denied 😫
It's a stunning save from Alisson. Maitland-Niles's cross is headed down into the ground by Adams, but the Liverpool keeper somehow gets down low to his right to get a hand to the ball.
Liverpool substitution: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain replaces Roberto Firmino Barbosa de Oliveira
A second change for the hosts.
Keep going, Saints 👊
It's been a good second half from Nathan Jones's side, who have pressed to reduce the deficit as the game ticks into the final 15 minutes.
Southampton substitution: Lyanco replaces Armel Bella-Kotchap
A fourth change of the day.
Van Dijk heads wide
Almost a goal against his former club, as Robertson's deep cross is met by the defender who stayed up following a corner, with his header drifting just wide.
Liverpool substitution: James Milner replaces Harvey Elliott
Liverpool make their first substitution of the afternoon.
Yellow Card for Mohammed Salisu (Southampton)
The defender goes into the book for a foul on Elliott.
Keep it up, lads 👊
Saints have created some good openings in the last five minutes, hinting there could be another twist in this game.
Alisson keeps out Edozie 😱
It's a good chance for the substitute, but Alisson is quick off of his line to keep out the teenager who was chasing a first senior goal.
Penalty shout for Salah
Bella-Kotchap is caught in possession allowing Salah to race into the box, but the German gets back to do enough to force the Egyptian to surrender possession (fairly, according to the referee).
BIG opening for Moi!
The Norwegian is slid in down the left-hand side of the box, but his dinked finish is met by the hand of Alisson, who parries the effort away.
Southampton substitution: Ainsley Maitland-Niles replaces Duje Ćaleta-Car
A third change, as Saints switch to four at the back.
Southampton substitution: Samuel Edozie replaces Adam Armstrong
Let's go, Sam!
Southampton substitution: Theo Walcott replaces Stuart Armstrong
A first switch.
Subs inbound...
Sam Edozie, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Theo Walcott are all preparing to come on for Saints.
Salah heads over
Alexander-Arnold's deep cross picks out Salah in the six-yard box, but he gets too much on the header and it sails over the bar.
Opening for Arma
Some patient play leads to Perraud having the chance to cross from the left. The Frenchman's ball finds Adam Armstrong in a bit of space with Joe Gomez slipping, but the striker's shot is rash and is cleared.
Firmino goes close
Robertson's corner from the left finds the head of Firmino on the edge of the six-yard box, but his looping header lands on the roof of the net.
Arma tests Alisson
It's a snapshot from the striker who's under pressure from Van Dijk, but it's straight into the midriff of the Brazilian keeper.
Play resumes ▶️
The second half begins at Anfield.
HALF TIME: Liverpool 3-1 Saints
A clinical half from the hosts, who were initially pegged back by Saints when Ché Adams cancelled out Roberto Firmino's early opener. Darwin Núñez the main menace for the hosts, with the Uruguayan grabbing a brace to give Jürgen Klopp's side some breathing room at the break.
Núñez makes it a brace
Firmino's pass puts Robertson into space down the left, with the Scotsman's first-time low delivery turned home by a sliding Núñez from six yards.
GOAL
Darwin Núñez (41’) | 3 – 1

Arma with a chance
It's a repeat of Adams's chance in the opening exchanges. Elyounoussi's cross from the right is perfect for Adam Armstrong at the near post, but the striker doesn't make a good enough connection and it bounces wide.
Welcome back, Roméo 👋
The midfielder is making his first start since August.
Elliott almost gets lucky
The midfielder tries to deliver the ball to the back post, but his miss-hit strike lands on the roof of the net, with Bazunu back peddling.
Liverpool in control
Having retaken the lead, Jürgen Klopp's side are enjoying a good spell of possession, with Saints having to defend resolutely.
Salah tests Bazunu
The Reds are finding too much space in the box, with Salah allowed to turn and shoot in the box, but Perraud's block diverts the ball kindly into the grasp of Bazunu.
Huge stop again ⛔️
Liverpool break on Southampton, resulting in Núñez's clever backheel finding Firmino six yards out, but Bazunu is quick off of his line once again to block the striker's attempt and pounce on the rebound.
Núñez pounces
It's a high-quality goal from the hosts. Elliott's lofted ball from the edge of the box is over the head of Bella-Kotchap and perfect for Núñez, who pokes a low strike beyond Bazunu.
GOAL
Darwin Núñez (21’) | 2 – 1

Núñez a threat
The Uruguayan is working off the shoulder of Bella-Kotchap, but the German does well to get a toe to the ball as Núñez looks to race into the box.
That's phenomenal, Bazunu! 👏
A huge stop from the Irishman. Núñez beats the offside trap down the left and sends a low ball in towards Salah, but Bazunu is off his line to block the Egyptian's shot from close range.
Chéle 🔥
A fourth Premier League goal of the season for Southampton's number 10.
A confident start
After the early setback, Jones's side have responded brilliantly. Having equalised through Adams, it's the visitors who remain on the front foot.
INSTANT REPLY 💥
What a response from Saints! Ward-Prowse's deep free-kick is swung into the box which lures Alisson off his line, but Adams meets the ball first to glance a header into the unguarded net.
GOOOAL!!!
Ché Adams (8’) | 1 – 1
Firmino strikes early
Roberton's wide free-kick from midway inside the Saints half is whipped in, with Firmino's header from just inside the box wrong-footing Bazunu, who can't recover to claw the ball out of the bottom corner.
GOAL
Roberto Firmino Barbosa de Oliveira (5’) | 1 – 0

Yellow Card for Duje Ćaleta-Car (Southampton)
An early booking for Ćaleta-Car, who takes out Salah as Liverpool looked to hit Saints on the break.
Calm from Salisu 👏
Núñez's cross from the left is coolly chested into the arms of Bazunu by Mohammed Salisu.
Chance for Ché
An early signal of intent from Saints. Elyounoussi, operating at right wing-back, sends in a dangerous cross, but Adams can't get above the ball and his header drifts wide of the target.
We will remember them ❤️
