FULL TIME: Saints 0-1 Newcastle

Disappointment at St Mary's as Southampton fall to a 1-0 defeat in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final clash with Newcastle. Joelinton's goal gave the visitor's the lead upon 73 minutes and while Adam Armstrong looked to find the equaliser shortly afterwards, it was then chalked off for an adjudged handball. Onto the second leg at St James' Park next week.

Charly Alcaraz continues to show his potential despite a difficult night in SO14, he launches an attack before laying off Sam Edozie down the wing. The youngster looks to cut in Ché Adams inside the area but the Scot fails to get himself in position.

The Poland international marks his return in a Southampton shirt as Nathan Jones is forced to replace his centre back.

Duje Ćaleta-Car is shown a second yellow card for a challenge on Allan Saint-Maximin. Newcastle now with a free-kick in a very dangerous position central to goal.

Perhaps the hosts best chance of the contest so far, Ché Adams finds himself in acres of space and one-on-one with Nick Pope approaching the goalline. The Scottish international takes a low shot but is denied by the Newcastle keeper. 

Saints surging forward

Another impressive break from Saints, this time through Kyle Walker-Peters who breezes past three defenders before crossing into the area to an awaiting James Ward-Prowse. It's a tight angle for the captain though, whose somewhat acrobatic effort fails to find the target. 

Saints looking to utilise Edozie down the left

Lovely play from Charly Alcaraz who feeds the perfect ball into Sam Edozie down the left flank, the youngster charges forward before slicing the ball across to intended target Adam Armstrong but the Newcastle defence is there to clear for the visitors. These substitutions have injected some pace into the contest. 

Walker-Peters calls for a penalty 

Nice play from Kyle Walker-Peters as he looks to work the ball into the area before being brought down just on the edge of the box. A defiant reaction from Stuart Attwell, who immediately dismisses the calls for a penalty.

Saints look to pounce on the counter-attack, earning themselves a corner in the process. James Ward-Prowse's corner falls to Sékou Mara who looks to slot the ball low but it's a comfortable save for Nick Pope.

Saints have their first opportunity of the second-half as Sékou Mara looks to find the net through an acrobatic effort but it goes wide of the post.

It remains goalless at half-time at St Mary's but not through lack of trying. The visitors did have the ball in the back of the net through Joelinton but a handball ruled it offside. Aggressive and energetic in equal measure so far, a huge second-half of cup football awaits in SO14. Come on you Saints!

As Moussa Djenepo breaks Nick Pope comes storming out of goal and straight into the path of the Malian, who hits the deck almost instantly. No penalty for Pope as Moussa Djenepo receives treatment.

Alcaraz forces Pope to deflect behind

With cheers of 'shoot' echoing around the stadium, Charly Alcaraz fires a shot from range straight into the path of Nick Pope who does well to get down but fails to get the ball under control as Saints earn a corner.

Mara sets his sights on goal

A smart run from Sékou Mara who then releases a shot from the edge of the box, his strike takes a slight deflection off of Miguel Almirón as the ball heads behind for a corner as the Saints fans ramp up the noise inside St Mary's. 

Mara takes a hit 

Sékou Mara takes a strike to the face from Bruno Guimarâes and Saints are awarded a free-kick in the defensive half.

The Croatian is penalised for a late challenge on Miguel Almirón. 

Light calls for a penalty 

Moussa Djenepo engages in a battle for the ball and is brought down just on the edge of the area, a slight glance to the referee who shakes his head and dismisses the appeal. 

Bazunu receives treatment 

A quick break in play as Gavin Bazunu receives treatment for a bloodied nose after a clash with Miguel Almirón. A few moments pass and the Irishman is good to continue. 

Bazunu punches clear

Trippier plays a quick one-two short from the corner before launching the ball into the box but Gavin Bazunu clears his line by about five yards before making a strong punch to clear the threat. 

Alcaraz denied by Schar

It seems like Charly Alcaraz is constantly in the right place at the right time tonight as he retreives the ball in the centre of the pitch again. The Argentinian lays the ball to James Ward-Prowse who cuts the ball into an on-running Charly Alcaraz but Fabian Schár does enough to make the block. 

Salisu makes a vital interception

Newcastle are looking increasingly dangerous on the attack, Joe Willock makes a lovely run down the left flank before finding Callum Wilson inside the area. The ball soon falls to Sean Longstaff but Mohammed Salisu is there to make a vital interception for Nathan Jones's men. 

Alcaraz hits the counter

High energy from the men in white who are looking to pounce on every ball at St Mary's, Salisu earns possession before setting Charly Alcaraz off down the centre of the pitch, he lays a ball into Mislav Oršić but there's a little too much on it for the Croatian.

Promising signs from the Argentinian youngster who does well to recover the ball for Saints in the centre of the pitch before a lovely one-two with James Ward-Prowse who is deemed offside as he appraoches the edge of the box.
