A disappointing end to an exhilerating cup run for Southampton. An energised performance in the second half kept the hopes alive but it was just too little too late for Nathan Jones's men who bow out at the semi-final stage of the Carabao Cup. Now to focus on the Premier League and a trip to Brentford on Saturday.
22.02Newcastle United substitution: Elliot Anderson replaces Jacob Murphy
Newcastle just running down the clock now as they edge closer to a Carabao Cup final.
Lavia fires it high
It's all systems go as Gavin Bazunu charges forward for a Southampton corner. James Ward-Prowse whips the ball into the box, his low ball falls to Roméo Lavia in acres of space inside the area but he lacks the execution to find the back of the net.
Newcastle United substitution: Jamaal Lascelles replaces Alexander Isak
Newcastle are forced into a late change as Isak fails to recover from his earlier knock.
Perraud tries his luck
Despite a spirited performance, Saints are struggling to find the breakthrough as the clock winds down. Romain Perraud has an attempt from 25 yards out but it's blocked and sent behind for a corner.
Seven additional minutes ...
One last lifeline at St James' Park.
Saints still searching
An excellent ball from James Bree to Sam Edozie to chase, the youngster beats his man in Dan Burn but his sliced cross across goal is cleared by Sven Botman.
Southampton substitution: Sékou Mara replaces Mohammed Salisu
One last roll of the dice.
Ward-Prowse denied by the head of Isak

Bruno Guimarães has his yellow card upgraded to a red for a dangerous challenge on Sam Edozie.
Yellow Card for Bruno Guimarães Rodriguez Moura (Newcastle United)

So, so close. Bruno Guimarães dances through the Saints defence before curling a powerful ball towards the goal but it edges just past the post.
Southampton substitution: Joe Aribo replaces Ibrahima Diallo
Another attacking change from Nathan Jones with just over ten minutes of play remaining.
Bazunu denies Longstaff hattrick
It's nearly game, set and match Newcastle as a Sean Longstaff strike from 25 yards out fires towards goal but Gavin Bazunu does incredibly well to send the ball back and behind for a Newcastle corner.
Armstrong denied by Pope
A wonderful ball through from a forward-thinking Roméo Lavia to Adam Armstrong inside the box who is clear on goal, the Newcastle lad tries to chip it over Nick Pope but the England international makes a crucial save.
James Bree showing promise
It's been an encouraging performance from newcomer James Bree in the second-half, who has been the maker of a number of attacks down the right flank.
Edozie intervenes
Excellent from youngster Sam Edozie who breaks up a promising Newcastle attack.
🎶 Oh when the Saints 🎶
The travelling fans look to rally their side as they're heard across St James' Park.

Newcastle United substitution: Alexander Isak replaces Miguel Almirón
Newcastle United substitution: Allan Saint-Maximin replaces Joe Willock

Newcastle looking to the bench
As the hour mark approaches and with a slight lull in the action, movement comes from the Newcastle bench as Eddie Howe looks to bring in reinforcements.
Schär strikes into the wall
The free-kick is placed central to goal and while Kieran Trippier is poised over the ball, it's Fabian Schär who delivers for Newcastle but his effort fires low and straight into the Saints wall.
Saints sharper ✨
A much better start to the second half for Saints. Newly introduced Romain Perraud darts forward and has some nice link-up play with James Ward-Prowse, the captain tries to cut it back to Ché Adams but Newcastle do enough to clear.
Back underway ⏳
Saints have just 45 minutes to keep their cup dream alive.
Southampton substitution: Romain Perraud replaces Lyanco
A statement of intent from Nathan Jones as the action gets back underway at St James' Park?
Southampton substitution: Roméo Lavia replaces Carlos Alcaraz
The first of two changes at the start of the second half.
HALF TIME: Newcastle 2-1 Saints
The contest looked seemingly over after just 21 minutes with a Sean Longstaff brace putting the visitors ahead but a sublime strike from Ché Adams has kept Saints in with a fighting chance. With it remaining 3-1 on aggregate, a huge shift is required in the second half from Nathan Jones's men. Come on you Saints!
Three additional minutes ...
Can Saints get another one back before the break?
Trippier sharp down the right flank
Mohammed Salisu does well to block out Kieran Trippier near the corner flag but the Ghanaian can only get the ball as far as Miguel Almirón, who ultimately sees his shot blocked and cleared.
Adams goal instills belief ✨
We're witnessing a much more positive Saints side after that Ché Adams goal, with the men in blue finding themselves in control more than they did in the opening 20 minutes.
Southampton substitution: Samuel Edozie replaces Kyle Walker-Peters
An enforced change as Kyle Walker-Peters picks up a knock and it's an attacking one from Nathan Jones.
Penalty call dismissed
There's calls from the Newcastle camp for a penalty as Wilson is brought down by Lyanco but VAR dismisses the claim.
Adams pulls one back
Absolutely sensational from Ché Adams who provides a glimmer of hope for Nathan Jones's men. Seemingly out of nowhere the Scot strikes from 25 yards out to pull one back. Is it too little too late?
GOOOAL!!!

Newcastle on top
Joelinton shrugs off Lyanco on a break down the right flank but Jan Bednarek uses his body well to send the ball behind for a corner. Kieran Trippier sends in a tantalising corner and as Fabian Schär rises to head home, Gavin Bazunu does well to clear for the visitors.
Longstaff nearly makes it two
Newcastle are full of confidence in the early stages and it's Sean Longstaff again who comes close to finding the net. Bruno Guimarães finds the midfielder in a similar position but this time his effort fires wide of the post.

An early goal for the visitors as Sean Longstaff consolidates a smart move down the right flank, with Longstaff firing a low finish into the corner.
