Key moments so far
- Saints trail to Newcastle at St Mary's
- Armstrong heads Saints in front via a deflection in the 25th minute
- The lead lasts only seven minutes, as Wood scores his first Newcastle goal to draw level
- Guimaraes also scores his first for the club, flicking home a 52nd-minute corner
FULL TIME: Southampton 1-2 Newcastle United
It's all over at St Mary's, as Saints fall to just their second home defeat of the season. Ralph Hasenhüttl's side took the lead through Stuart Armstrong's deflected header, but allowed Newcastle back into the game soon after, as Chris Wood headed home Jonjo Shelvey's cross. It was left to Bruno Guimaraes to complete the turnaround early in the second half, as Newcastle's fine form continues.
21.28Armstrong denied by Dubravka
There was still time for Stuart Armstrong to cut inside and hit a left-footed shot tipped over by Dubvraka. Forster makes his way forward for the corner, but a foul is instantly awarded and Newcastle escape.
Adams denied by last-ditch block
Saints have kept pushing but it looks like they're going to run out of time, as Willock lunges in to deny Adams as the striker pulled the trigger in the box.
Newcastle United substitution: Javier Manquillo replaces Emil Krafth
It's a straight swap at full-back for the closing stages.
6️⃣ added minutes...
It's a lengthy period of stoppage time, and Saints will fancy their chances of cashing in.
Salisu goes close again...
The winger runs at Krafth and wins a corner off the full-back, before Salisu meets Walker-Peters's cross with a header brilliantly clawed out by Dubravka. Newcastle are hanging on now.
Southampton substitution: Moussa Djenepo replaces Mohamed Elyounoussi
It's a last throw of the dice for Saints, as Djenepo enters the fray for the final five minutes plus stoppage time.
Newcastle United substitution: Miguel Almirón replaces Ryan Fraser
Both teams are going to make a change here, starting with the visitors.
Salisu denied
That's probably the closest Saints have come since the interval. After Livramento's miss-hit cross forces Dubravka to scamper back and tip the ball over his own crossbar, Ward-Prowse's subsequent corner is met by Salisu, who forces the keeper into another save, diving to his right. Much better from Saints.
Southampton substitution: Shane Long replaces Oriol Romeu
Saints' second change is a very attacking one. Ralph is going for it!
1️⃣5️⃣ minutes remain...
Saints are pushing but struggling to create chances here. Newcastle are happy to contain and counter, which has worked for them since they went in front. Keep pushing, lads!
Armstrong shoots wide
Positive play from the substitute, who turns inside and goes for goal with his left foot, but he can't get the curl to bring his shot back inside the far post and it's comfortably wide.
Southampton substitution: Adam Armstrong replaces Armando Broja
It looks like Broja is hobbling as he departs to be replaced by former Newcastle man Armstrong.
Yellow Card for Jan Bednarek (Southampton)
Bednarek flies in and catches Willock, who did well to break free and give his defence some respite.
Newcastle United substitution: Sean Longstaff replaces Bruno Guimarães Rodriguez Moura
Midway through the second half the visitors make the first change.
Guimaraes is down again...
It's the second time the Brazilian has gone down needing treatment. This time Burn signals to the bench that a substitution is going to be needed. Meanwhile, Saints have taken the opportunity to have a touchline debrief.
Elyounoussi close to getting in
Ward-Prowse arrows a pass in behind the Newcastle defence and Elyounoussi reads his intentions, but he just can't quite stretch enough to bring the ball under his spell with only Dubravka to beat.
Newcastle threaten again
The visitors are full of life now. Guimaraes's header is blocked by Walker-Peters, Targett's low shot is cleared to safety and then Forster intervenes to boot the ball away soon after. Saints are having to weather a storm at the moment.
Newcastle take the lead
A deep corner is headed back across goal by Burn, and Guimaraes improvises to brilliantly flick the ball into the net from six yards. Newcastle have hardly threatened Saints' goal all night, but they've grabbed the lead.
GOAL
Bruno Guimarães Rodriguez Moura (52’) | 1 – 2

Murphy claims handball
The winger hits a powerful shot into a crowded penalty area. It strikes Elyounoussi and goes behind for a corner, but cries for a penalty are desperately optimistic.
Bright start from Saints
They've forced a couple of early corners in the second half, but no goal attempts as yet. The game is following a similar pattern to the first period, with Saints on the front foot.
We're back under way...
The second half is up and running. Come on, Saints!
HALF TIME: Southampton 1-1 Newcastle United
It's all square at the interval, but Saints have been on top. Stuart Armstrong headed the hosts in front as his 25th-minute header deflected in off Dan Burn, but Newcastle were behind for only seven minutes as Chris Wood headed home his first goal for the club to restore parity. Armando Broja should have scored before Armstrong did, while Ché Adams rattled the bar with a thumping volley at 1-1.
3️⃣ added minutes...
We're into first-half stoppage time. The Newcastle physio has been on to attend to Schar and Guimaraes, hence the additional time.
Saints finishing strongly
This was a slow burner of a half but has come to life. Saints have shaded it and remain on the front foot, as Ward-Prowse whips in a dangerous cross that takes a flick off a Newcastle head on its way behind for a corner.
Guimaraes is down
The Brazilian may have had a nasty fall. Both teams have taken the opportunity to have an impromptu drinks break five minutes before the interval.
Adams smashes the bar!
What. A. Strike. Livramento's cross bounces up off Armstrong and drops kindly for Adams near the right corner of the six-yard box. He connects perfectly on the volley with a sweet strike, but watches on as the ball crashes against the underside of the bar and back into play. So unlucky!
Wood levels things up
An equaliser out of nothing for Newcastle. Shelvey crosses from deep and Wood darts in behind Salisu to bury a textbook header - his first goal for his new club.
GOAL
Chris Wood (32’) | 1 – 1

Saints are in front!
Broja might have scored moments earlier, but Armstrong has now! Walker-Peters attacks down the left and crosses deep. It's nodded back across goal by Elyounoussi via Broja's back, and Armstrong heads home via a deflection. It's all a bit messy but Saints don't care!
GOOOAL!!!
Stuart Armstrong (25’) | 1 – 0
BIG chance for Broja!
Romeu wins the ball and Adams drives forward with Broja to his right. Nothing wrong with the pass, but crucially the Albanian's first touch escapes him and he's stretching for the shot, which is off target.
Romeu fires over
That's half a chance from the resulting corner, which is cleared to Romeu, who takes a touch and attempts to repeat his wonder strike against Norwich, but this time it flies into the stand behind the goal.
Terrific vision from Romeu
The midfielder sends a driven pass in behind the Newcastle defence for Broja, who just can't take it in his stride but still forces a corner from Dubravka.
Schar is back on
Whatever problem he had, he seems to have run it off...
Schar receiving treatment
The centre-back is struggling here. He seems to have a groin problem, and Newcastle could be forced into an early change.
Yellow Card for Jacob Murphy (Newcastle United)
That's the first card of the night, as Murphy ends a barnstorming run from Walker-Peters the only way he could - illegally.
Newcastle break with pace
Willock surges forward and finds Murphy to his right, whose low cross is cleared behind for another Newcastle corner by Bednarek.
Guimaraes tries his luck
The Brazilian midfielder is making his first start tonight, and space opened up in front of him to have a shot from 25 yards, but it deflects behind for a corner. Saints have now been awarded a free-kick for offside as the attack breaks down.
Early pressure from Saints
It's been a positive start from the hosts, who have already put Newcastle under pressure with a couple of early crosses. One is cleared only to Romeu, who heads it back with interest, but it's an easy gather for goalkeeper Dubravka.
We're under way!
The action is up and running in a lively atmosphere at St Mary's.

19.15He's back! 🧱
Fit again after injury, the return of Mohammed Salisu is one of two changes for Saints. Elsewhere, Kyle Walker-Peters is also recalled, as Jack Stephens and Romain Perraud drop to the bench.
