Werner denied hat-trick

Werner looks to get his third with a left-footed shot from inside the area but Bednarek slides in to clear and deny Werner his hat-trick.

With less than ten minutes of action remaining at St Mary's, it seems as though the visitors are content with their six goal advantage as the pace has slowed down drastically.

Alonso drills wide

Diallo is disposessed in midfield as Chelsea surge towards Forster's goal, with the ball at Alonso's feet he sends a low, bouncing shot but it bounces wide of the far post.

Southampton substitution: Will Smallbone replaces Tino Livramento

Third and final substitution from Hasenhüttl.

Bednarek is shown a yellow for a late challenge on Loftus-Cheek.

46’

Southampton substitution: Ibrahima Diallo replaces Adam Armstrong

A second substitution of the afternoon.

HALF TIME: Saints 0-4 Chelsea

A disappointing first half at St Mary's as Chelsea make a statement after a difficult week of results. A huge performance needed in the second half if Saints are to get anything out of this game.

45+1’

Forster limiting the damage

Despite conceding four goals already, the Southampton goalkeeper has made a number of important saves to limit the damage at St Mary's. The latest of which comes as Rüdiger heads down form the corner, forcing Forster low to make the block.

44’

Forster denies Havertz

Another crucial save from Forster who denies Havertz a second.

41’

Saints failing to find an opening

Another soft attempt on goal as Saints look to find a way back into this game but Walker-Peters ball into Livramento at the far post fails to meet its target and heads behind for a goal kick.

35’

Southampton substitution: Yan Valery replaces Oriol Romeu

An early substitution for Hasenhüttl as Valery comes on in place of Romeu.

Havertz in on the action

Chelsea extend their lead at St Mary's, Werner hits the woodwork for the third time already this afternoon but it's a simple tap in for Havertz who is ready and waiting to make it four.

Saints searching for an opening

Adam Armstrong seeks to find a way back into the game as he launches an attack against the Chelsea defence but Saints still can't find the breakthrough.

28’

Drop in tempo

With Chelsea firmly in control of the game, a lull in the action has ensued. A huge performance from Ralph Hasenhüttl's men is needed to pull this one back.

Werner adds a third

After hitting the post twice in the opening ten minutes, Werner finally finds his way onto the scoresheet at St Mary's as the visitors now hold a three goal advantage. Ward-Prowse gets unlucky as his clearing header falls straight into the path of Werner who easily finds his way past Bednarek before releasing his shot into the back of the net.

GOAL

Timo Werner (21’) | 0 3

19’

Forster makes crucial block

It's all Chelsea at the moment as they very nearly make it three. Alonso finds Werner who is in close range of Forster but an outstretched arm from the Saints goalkeeper denies Chelsea their third goal.

Mount makes it two

Intent is clear from Thomas Tuchel's men who hold a two goal advantage after just 15 minutes at St Mary's. Walker-Peters looks to have made a vital clearance for Saints but the ball only goes as far as Mount, who drills a low bouncing shot into the bottom left hand corner to double Chelsea's lead.

Saints look to retaliate

An almost instant response from Saints who nearly benefit from another fine Ward-Prowse delivery which is close to finding its way in at the back post.

Alonso gives Chelsea the lead

Relentless from Chelsea who are clearly looking to prove a point after losing their last two games. Mount controls the ball excellently with his chest before flicking the ball over his shoulder to an awaiting Alonso, who makes no error in slipping the ball between Forster's legs and into the back of the net.

OFF THE BAR

Just six minutes into the action at St Mary's and Chelsea have been denied twice by the woodwork. A fine cross from Loftus-Cheek finds Werner who again misses out on getting on the scoresheet by the finest of margins.

6’

Armstrong's shot deflected behind

An end-to-end start to events in SO14 as Adam Armstrong's shot is deflected behind for another Saints corner. Ward-Prowse's delivery eventually falls for Stuart Armstrong on the edge of the box who launches a powerful strike but it's adequately blocked by the Chelsea defence,.

4’

Werner hits the post

Chelsea retaliate from the Saints charge instantly with Werner launching an electric attack, he releases a low shot goalwards but it bounces off the post. Lucky escape for the hosts.

3’

Ward-Prowse lively

A slip up from Rüdiger means Saints have an early corner at St Mary's, another solid delivery from Ward-Prowse who attempts to find Adams in the box. It evades the Scotland international and appears to knock an arm in the Chelsea defence but play continues as Chelsea hit the counter.

1’

Early press from Saints

An early opportunity for Saints as Adams is brought down by Kante. A fine delivery from captain Ward-Prowse but it meets the head of a Chelsea player and bounces straight into the hands of Mendy. A positive start from the hosts.

LOOKING FOR REDEMPTION | Chelsea 1-1 Saints

Southampton's Carabao Cup journey came to an end at the hands of Chelsea back in October, where they emerged victorious at Stamford Bridge on penalties. Can the Saints claim redemption at St Mary's?

12.56

We have to get things ready for Saturday. We can't think about the Bernabeu. It is crucial that we go to Southampton. If we keep playing like this we will lose at Southampton and then we will get hammered at Bernabeu. I worry more about Southampton than Real Madrid for the rest of this week."

It’s a good thing to see that the big teams are struggling sometimes. The bad thing is that this doesn’t happen very often. So, as I know them and how they work, he [Tuchel] will be very critical with them and will try to find a reaction.”
