MUN vs SOU As It Happened
Key moments so far
- Jadon Sancho gives Manchester United the lead after 21 minutes
- Ché Adams draws Saints level shortly after the break
- Heroic goalkeeping from Fraser Forster denies United a late winner
- HALF TIME: Man United 1-0 Saints
FULL TIME: Man United 1-1 Saints
The points are shared at Old Trafford after an enthralling 90 minutes of action. Opportunities continually presenting themselves at either end of the pitch, Jadon Sancho and Ché Adams were the only players to get themselves on the scoresheet. Some heroic goalkeeping from Fraser Forster ensured Hasenhüttl's men claimed another valuable point on the road. Next up: Everton!
Southampton substitution: Ibrahima Diallo replaces Oriol Romeu
Hasenhüttl's third and final substitution of the match.
PHENOMENAL SAVE FROM FORSTER
Absolutely divine goalkeeping from Forster. Maguire gets a powerful head to the end of Shaw's free-kick but a diving Forster gets down in enough time to clear the ball seconds before it goes over the line.
Fernandes recovers from Walker-Peters
Some lovely work from Broja and Walker-Peters inside the area but there are simply too many United bodies for them to beat, with Fernandes eventually clearing for United.
Yellow Card for Jesse Lingard (Manchester United)
Shortly after coming on, Lingard finds himself in the book for a late challenge on Adams.
VAR Decision: Penalty not awarded for Southampton [Armando Broja] was confirmed
Maguire brings down Broja inside the area and stands on his leg as he gets away. Relief for United, frustration for Saints.
Yellow Card for Paul Pogba (Manchester United)
Pogba in the book for a follow-through on Livramento, who is down in some discomfort.
Manchester United substitution: Jesse Lingard replaces Marcus Rashford
United's second substitution of the afternoon.
Rashford shoots wide
A looping ball from Fernandes finds Rashford who looks to be in on goal but his shot lacks both power and direction.
Elanga looks to make instant impact
A strong ball in from Elanga presents a great opportunity for the hosts to regain the advantage but Stephens is there to deny him.
Manchester United substitution: Anthony Elanga replaces Scott McTominay
Rangnick makes his first substitution of the tie.
Ronaldo denied by offside flag
Fernandes' delivery is delightful and though Ronaldo finds the back of the net, there's no doubting that he was in an offside position. Shame.
Southampton substitution: Tino Livramento replaces Mohamed Elyounoussi
Just as Elyounoussi looks to be getting himself into the book, Hasenhüttl makes a well timed substitution as Livramento is introduced to the game.
Saints searching for a second
Another promising attack for Saints that amounts to nothing as Broja's flick over De Gea falls to the United defence.
Armstrong fires over
Beautiful build up play as Saints look to take control of this tie, with Romeu and Elyounoussi linking up nicely before Armstrong releases his shot. Disappointing from the Scot as it flies well over the crossbar.
Ronaldo forces Forster save
More heroics from Forster who makes two impressive saves. A close, powerful shot from the Portugese international is the first to cause problems with Forster getting enough to it to send the ball behind. The resulting corner presented another opportunity for the hosts, with Dalot looking to tap in from the near post before Forster intervenes.
Forster makes vital clearance
Shaw sends the free-kick in to a packed penalty area, Maguire gets a touch away but quicking from Forster sees him make another crucial clearance, this time with the use of his feet off the line.
Broja looking dangerous
Despite constant tugging from Shaw, Broja makes a delightful run before releasing a powerful strike towards goal forcing De Gea into a one handed save to send the ball behind for a Saints corner.
Missed opportunity
A nice run from Walker-Peters covering a great portion of the pitch, with Broja to his right and Armstrong to his left. He plays it to Armstrong but catches the ball under his feet and the resulting shot fails to challenge De Gea.
ADAMS DRAWS SAINTS LEVEL
Just three minutes into the second half and Saints are back on level terms at Old Trafford. Exceptional positioning from Elyounoussi who receives the ball from Perraud before releasing Adams. Effortlessly looking, Adams makes no hesitation in sending the ball past De Gea and into the back of the net.
GOOOAL!!!
Ché Adams (48’) | 1 – 1
Back to it 👊
Let's do this, Saints!
Southampton substitution: Jack Stephens replaces Jan Bednarek
Hasenhüttl makes a half time substitution.
HALF TIME: Man United 1-0 Saints
An end-to-end first half at Old Trafford as Ralph Hasenhüttl's side trail at the break. Plenty of opportunities for both sides but Jadon Sancho the only player to get on the scoresheet in the first 45 minutes of play. A huge second half ahead as Saints look to come from behind once more. Come on you Saints!
VAR Decision: Goal not awarded for Manchester United [Paul Pogba] was confirmed
Pogba finds the back of the net but the offside flag goes up as Ronaldo is caught offside in the build up.
Perraud comes close
Saints continue to mount the pressure on United, this time it's Perraud that gets his shot off in front of goal. A lovely passage of play as Elyounoussi releases Perraud who works his way into the penalty area, it's a decent attempt but De Gea gets down in time to make a comfortable save.
Armstrong denied by De Gea
With half-time approaching more opportunities are presenting themselves for Saints, a rogue ball is delivered in the centre of the box and while Armstrong makes the most of the circumstances, his shot lacks power and is saved by a diving de Gea.
Walker-Peters launches tantalising cross
Well worked play from Saints with Walker-Peters launching in a promising ball from the right flank, plenty of players in the box to receive it but none of them are able to get a touch and the ball bounces past the face of goal.
Better from Saints
A nice bit of play from the visitors as Armstrong plays a quick 1-2 with Romeu before firing a shot towards goal, with his effort ultimately bouncing wide of the near post.
Yellow Card for Scott McTominay (Manchester United)
McTominay is shown a yellow for two challenges on Elyounoussi in the space of a couple of minutes around the half-way line.
United searching for more
Fernandes looks to be launching the ball in from the set piece but instead plays a sly ball into Pogba who attempts to find the target, but the connection is poor and it's an easy save for Forster.
Ward-Prowse up to old tricks
Attempting the same magical pass that saw Saints score twice in midweek, the captain launches another sublime ball into the box as his side look to find an instant equaliser at Old Trafford. Not to be this time, though, as the United defence adequately clears.
Sancho gives United the lead
A lovely run from Rashford down the right flank before he releases Sancho in front of goal, with the 21-year-old making no error in netting his first goal at Old Trafford. A very open game so far with plenty more to come.
GOAL
Jadon Sancho (22’) | 1 – 0

Yellow Card for Marcus Rashford (Manchester United)
Rashford is the first in the book for a rash challenge on Perraud.
Pogba shows his class
A delightful cross-field ball from Pogba finds the feet of Rashford on the right to kick-start another United attack, the situation is soon diffused by the Saints defence, though, as Salisu sees the ball out for a Saints goal kick.
Sancho ignites counter attack
With Saints missing out, Sancho launches the counter for the hosts. Driving into the penalty area and releasing a shot, Forster makes a fine save to deny the 21-year-old his first goal at Old Trafford.
Adams slip halts Saints advance
Another lovely move from Ralph Hasenhüttl's men as Elyounoussi sends in a tantalising ball from the left and finds Walker-Peters, his shot finds Adams but a slip up from the Scot sees the ball bounce away. Ward-Prowse is there to recover the ball for Saints but his effort flies into a solid United defence.
Perraud denies Ronaldo
Some nice work from United as Sancho releases Ronaldo in plenty of space on the edge of the box. Forster comes off his line to defend but Ronaldo effortlessly skips past him, his shot is on target but lacks power and Perraud has enough time to get back and make a crucial block.
Sancho looks to monopolise on Saints slip up
Pogba releases a beautiful through ball to Sancho who works his way into the box, he tries to find Ronaldo to his right but Romeu is there to intervene for Saints.
Beautiful run from Broja
Both sides trying to feel their way into the game at Old Trafford. Broja makes a lovely run down the right flank, dancing his way past Varane, he tries to release Elyounoussi in the area but the Norwegian can't quite get to it and Dalot gets the ball away to safety for the hosts.
Underway in Manchester!
Let's go, Saints!

FLASHBACK: Saints 1-1 Manchester United
The points were shared when United visited St Mary's back in August but will there be a winner at Old Trafford this afternoon?
10.1510.00We are fully aware this will be a difficult one. Obviously, I watched the game at Spurs during the week and they really deserved to win. They tactically played at a very high level and this will be a challenge for us, but I'm sure we'll be up for that challenge."

📍 Old Trafford 📍
It's matchday in Manchester as Southampton look to continue their impressive form as they face Ralf Rangnick's United. The hosts could only manage a draw in midweek with bottom of the table Burnley, while Saints came from behind to claim all three points at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Saints' record at Old Trafford is flawed, but it's the season for changing the records. Come on you Saints!
